Evaluating learning
Last month we discussed how to learn on your own, even within the framework of formal education, at a rate without a formal school. Care should be taken to ensure that all the materials provided during the first month of ‘Learn at Home’ are based on their textbooks and syllabus and also have time. Moving on to the learning process, this month we will discuss how you as a teacher will learn about the progress your learners are making.
Yes, this month we will discuss with you ‘assessment’ – which is an essential part of any structured and formal learning process. What do we evaluate this month? And why? We will discuss this and also how to evaluate yourself especially in the learning process. Come on, what do we evaluate? Let’s start by discussing that, we evaluate “why and how? Before we discuss, it is important that we understand the assessment, covering all contexts.
Defining assessment in education
An assessment that determines whether education goals are met. Teachers are constantly asked: “Do we teach what we should teach? “,” Are we reaching the goal we set ?; Do we need to refine our educational process to make education more meaningful? According to the dictionary, the word ‘evaluation’ means the process of giving an opinion or making a decision after carefully considering something or someone.
Teaching – In the context of the learning process, learning achievement can be assessed using a variety of methods. Thus, in the context of formal education, assessment is the process of gathering information that accurately describes how a student achieves his or her subject or course expectations.
For most people involved in education, evaluation is an “inevitable evil”! Like because in formal education, exams have become synonymous with assessment! Unfortunately, the concept of ‘exams and tests’ frightens students into “passing or failing” and at the same time fears being tarnished by the name of the one who can or will not succeed, or the one who performs well or the one who performs poorly. . As a result, for many decades in most formal education systems, ‘assessment’ has been used unilaterally to determine how good or how poor a student is in an exam!
