Distance learning is a much broader term, both in terms of
its indicative meaning and implication.
Distance learning is defined differently by different people based on
knowledge, realizations, and perspectives.
As such, it is difficult to come up with a comprehensive definition that
covers all its indicative meanings and connotations. Although it is difficult to give a concise and
universally accepted definition of distance learning, some definitions given by
different people about different aspects of distance education have given us a
holistic picture of the concept of distance learning.

Personnel Training and Research has presented the
definitions of distance education given by Wadimar, Moore, Dohman Peters and
Hamburg with brief and concise notes on each.

We will look at these definitions and notes as they represent the more elaborate aspects that make up the sections of distance learning definitions. Vadimare’s works include ‘Open Learning’, ‘Distance Education’, ‘Distance Education’ and ‘Independent Study’. The term ‘independent study’ is used but it consistently supports the latter terminology. It defines ‘independent’ study as follows.
‘Independent’ study includes various forms of study-teaching system. In which professors and scholars perform their essential duties and responsibilities separately from each other by communicating in many ways. Its objectives are to free on-campus or in-house students from unsuitable classroom investments or patterns, to provide opportunities for continuing studies in their own environments, to provide external students with the ability to self-study, and to develop an educated person’s full maturity in all students.
